Notes on a Theft

Late. Great. Shappy.

There is a Latin phrase — sui generis — which means “of its own kind,” but like with a connotation of “a category of one,” that sprang to mind when I learned today of the death of my friend Shappy. I won’t claim that ours was a deep or close friendship — we were mostly connected on social media, and I don’t think I’d seen him in person for several years. But a while back, he and I shared stages and I got to watch him do standup and performance poetry and character stuff. He was a flabbergasting creature.
